Charles Henry Skevington

Charles Harry was the youngest son of John Skevington and his first wife Hannah Elizabeth (nee Clifton) John married Hannah Elizabeth (b. 1858 A/M/J Worksop) in 1880 (J/A/S Worksop). They were to have at least three children: Rachel Annie birth registered 1882 J/F/M Nottingham, John William b. 1883 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Charles Harry birth registered 1887 J/F/M Nottingham. In 1881 John (24), a tripe dresser for a provision dealer, and Hannah (23) were living at 34 Radford Road, Nottingham. The first of their three children was born in 1881/82 and the youngest, Charles, in 1886/87 but sadly Hannah died on 20 March 1887 aged 28. John married Miriam Harwood in 1890 (O/N/D Nottingham) and they continued to live at 34 Radford Road as recorded on the 1891 Census: John (34) who was still working as a tripe dresser, Miriam (26), Rachel (9), John (7) and Charles (4). Also in the household was Edith Smith (16), a general servant. By the time of the 1901 Census John was working as a tripe dresser on his own account. He and Miriam were still at 34 Radford Road with the three children; Rachel (19) a blouse machinist, John (17) and Charles (14). John senior died two years later on 27 February 1903 at the age of 47 and by 1911 his widow Miriam was living on her own at 1 Stansfield Avenue, Stansfield Street, Nottingham; she was described as having 'private means.' Charles' sister, Rachel, had married Arthur Clark in 1906 (J/A/S Nottingham) and in 1911 they were living at 25 Wheldrake Road, Sheffield. Arthur (27, b. Nottingham) was an iron and steel turner boring gun tubes (heavy ordnance guns) and he and Rachel (29) had three children; William Arthur (3, b. Sheffield), John Clifton (2, b. Nottinghamshire) and Dorothy Evelyn (3 months b. Sheffield). By 1911 Charles (24) was a manager at a blouse warehouse and living with his maternal aunt, Sarah Stone nee Clifton (54) and her husband, Thomas Stone (48) a dray loader (railway goods), at 141 Rupert Street, Wilford Road, Meadows, Nottingham. Charles married Elizabeth A Burton in 1914 (A/M/J Basford). She may have remarried after Charles' death as there is a record of the marriage of an Elizabeth A Skevington to Charles RS Porter in 1919 (J/A/S Nottingham). Charles' older brother, John, has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census, but a record has been found of a John William Skevington in the Royal Naval Reserve. The UK Naval Officers Record Cards/File Index lists a John William Skevington as a Lieutenant (S), service number 00159P and the Navy List for October 1913 lists him under Royal Naval Reserve Assistant Paymaster, seniority 14 August 1912 (probably living in Middlesborough) and again in a Navy List for 1923 under RNR/Retired Officer, Paymaster John William Skevington, seniority 14 August 1914. As a reservist he was recalled for service in the war and he is listed on the 1914/18 Medal Roll. There is a record of a John William Skevington, b. October 1883, who died in 1972 (Mar Teeside) aged 88. The children's stepmother, Miriam Skevington, died on 7 August 1942 aged 77.
