James William Storr was born in 1897 and baptised on 24th March 1897 at Shirebrook. He was the eldest son of a coal miner Charles William and Margaret Storr (née Randall) of 15 White City, Rainworth, Mansfield. His father was born in 1874 at Old Leake, Boston, his mother in 1877 at Brampton, Derbyshire. Married near Mansfield in 1896, they had eleven children, eight surviving infancy - James William b.1897 Shirebrook, Charlotte b.1901 Shirebrook, George Henry b.1903 Mansfield Woodhouse, Martha Jane b.1905 Forest Town, Albert Edward b.1907 Forest Town, Charles b.1909 Forest Town, Evelyn b.1911 Forest Town and Elsie b.1913 at Rainworth. In 1911, the family lived at 17, Fourth Avenue, Forest Town, Mansfield. Also in 1911, James William lived with his grandparents who kept the Butchers’ Arms at Old Leake.
James William Storr enlisted on 1st September 1914 at Boston, giving his age as 19 years and 220 days. He was posted to the 8th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment on 15th September 1914. Landing in France on 10th September 1915, he took part in the battle of Loos during which he received a gunshot wound to his leg and foot and was captured on 26th September 1915. He died of pneumonia whilst a prisoner of war at a labour camp at Mengede near Dortmund. He was initially buried at Mengede Protestant Cemetery later being transferred to Cologne Southern Cemetery, Grave Reference: II D 27.
