Horace Boilstone was born in 1885 the son of William a bricklayer and Annie Boilstone( née Whittaker) of 14 Ryehill Cottages, Nottingham. His father was born in 1860 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, his mother (1865-1909) at Stathern, Leicestershire. Married in 1884 at Nottingham, they had eight children, five surviving early childhood - Horace b.1885 Joseph b.1891 Birmingham, Leonard b.1892 Birmingham, Maude b.1893 Birmingham, and Minnie b.1893 Birmingham. In 1911, they lived at 1, Rutland Terrace, Bunbury Street, Meadows, Nottingham. Joseph and Leonard were shop assistants, Maude a lace hand whilst Minnie was still at school. In 1911, Horace (listed as Boilston on the census) was living at 40, High Street, Skegness.
Horace Boilstone enlisted at Nottingham having previously served in the army and retired. He sailed for Gallipoli in early July 1915, arriving at Mudros Bay on August 7th. He fell two days later in an advance on Turkish positions near Hetman Chair. More than 100 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters died in this action during which all their officers were either killed or wounded.
Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Panel 151 to 153 Horace’s brother Leonard enlisted at Nottingham on 8th September 1914 and was posted to the Sherwood Foresters. However he was discharged from the army on 29th October 1914 as not likely to become an efficient soldier. The surname is spelt variously as Boylstone, Boilston or Boilstone depending upon the document sourced. Research by Peter Gillings
