Family History

Albert Burton was born in 1876 the son of Joshua Joseph and Martha Burton (née Chawner). His father was born in 1835 at Basford and died in 1917 aged 82. His mother was born in 1836 also at Basford and died in 1890 aged 54. Married in 1858 at Carrington, they had eight children all born at Basford - Mary Ann b.1858, William b.1861, Joshua b.1864, Elizabeth b.1866, Sarah Ann b.1868, Thomas b.1870, Arthur b.1873 and Albert b.1876. Albert married Anne Maria Widdowson on 6th March 1897 at Basford Parish Church and they had four children - Albert born 26th August 1897, Charles born 1899, Wilfred born 30th October 1900 and Arthur born 31st August 1907. In 1911, they lived at 5, Bell Terrace, Cheltenham Street, Basford. Anne Maria was a lace curtain mender. With effect from 21/11/1917, Anne Maria was awarded a weekly pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence for herself and one child.

Military History

Albert Burton attested on 9th December 1915 at Nottingham aged 39 years 10 months. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised on 28th July 1916 at Derby. He was posted to the 3rd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and transferred to the 2nd (Garrison) Battalion on 26th August 1916. Admitted to the Military Hospital at Carrington with pneumonia on 17th May 1917, he died seven days later. He did not serve abroad.

Nottingham Northern (Bulwell) Cemetery Grave Reference: D 5 22 Albert's son Charles died of wouds 10/10/1918 fighting with 15th Bn Highland Light Infantry. He had previously served with the Sherwood Foresters. Research by Peter Gillings
