Percy Maxfield was born in 1891 the son of Henry and Annie Maxfield (née Robey). His father was born in 1865 at Nottingham and died there in 1890 aged 25. His mother was born in 1868 at Basford and died aged 44 in 1912. Married in 1886, they had four children, two surviving infancy – Percy and Henry (1887). In 1891, they lodged at 7, Osbourne Terrace, Nottingham with relatives James and Lavina Robey. In 1911 Annie Maxfiled lived at 27, Albion Street, Mansfield with her brother John and nephew John William Robey. Percy at this time was serving with 118th Bty Royal Field Artillery at Lille Barracks, Aldershot. Percy’s effects of £118/18s/3d were left to his brother Henry Harry Maxfield (Probate Nottingham 2/5/1921).
Percy Maxfield enlisted at Mansfield prior to 1911. He landed on 17th November 1914 in the Asiatic theatre of war and was taken prisoner following the surrender of the garrison at Kut on 29th April 1916. He was reported to be in Turkish hands on 23rd June 1916 . His date of death was assumed to have occurred either on 1st June 1916 (CWGC and SDGW) or between 1st June 1916 and 5th May 1918 (Register of Soldiers' Effects).
