Wilfred Norman was born in 1893 the son of Tom, a thrashing machine operative, and Lucy Jane Norman (née Brown). His father was born in 1859 at East Drayton, his mother in 1863 at Rampton. Married in 1886, they had six children, five surviving infancy - Albert Henry b.1888, Mabel Annie b.1891, Wilfred b.1893, Dora b.1901 and Gladys b.1901. In 1901 they lived at Treswell Road, Rampton and in 1911 at Saxilby, Lincolnshire. His family was living at Fenton near Newton on Trent following Wilfred’s death. There are a number of letters from his father on his army service record which survives.
Wilfred Norman enlisted at Lincoln on 29th May 1911 aged 18 years and 1 month. He first entered a theatre of war (Asiatic) on 17th November 1914. He was taken prisoner following the surrender of the garrison at Kut on 29th April 1916 and died of dysentery in enemy custody.
