He was the son of Joseph and Mary Jordan and the brother of Alice, Clarence, Nelly, Mabel, Bertyha, Frank and Philip Jordan. In 1901 the family lived at Melbourne, Derbyshire and in 1911 at Halam, Southwell, Nottinghamshire. Joseph was the husband of Althea Jordan and the father of Clifford Jordan.

His birth was registered A/M/J 1896 so he may have been 21 when killed. He was killed between 10th and 18th April 1918. Margaret Rose, Jordan's great granddaughter, notes 'His family farmed at Edingley near Southwell. My grandma worked for Starkeys of Southwell as a maid before marriage. My dad was born 1/2/18 so was only a few weeks old when Joseph was killed.'
