Family History

Francis Herbert Reek was born in 1886 the son of the late John Henry a brewers drayman and his first wife the late Sarah Reek née James of 4 Arnold Yard, Arnold Lane, Basford. John Henry was born in 1854 at Whatton, he died in 1917 aged 63 yrs, Sarah James was born in 1857 at Elton she died in 1888 aged 29 yrs. married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they had 2 other children, Henry b1880 and Arthur b1886. His father went on to remarry Sarah Ann Southeringham (born 1868 at Balderton,) they married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district, they had a further 8 children. In 1915 he was living with his father at 7 Eastville Street, Peashill Road, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Francis Herbert Reek enlisted on 12th May 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 29 yrs and 7 months, his address was 7 Eastville Street, Peashill Road, Nottingham, his occupation was that of a coal miner and his nest of kin was his father John Henry of the same address. He was posted to the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regimen. He embarked from Southampton on 6th March 1916. On 20th March 1916 he was transferred to the 181 Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. He was reported missing and later killed in action on 16th April 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial Panel 52 to 54
