Family History

Arthur Wilford was born in 1877 at Mansfield and was the son of George a general labourer and Mary Wilford of Mansfield. His father George was born in 1835 at Arnold, he died in 1905 aged 71 yrs and his mother Mary was born in 1837 at Mansfield Woodhouse, she died in 1909 aged 73 yrs, they had the following children, Sarah b1859, George b1867, William b1869, Lilly b1872 and Arthur b1877. Arthur married his wife Sarah Ellen Thrall (born 1st May 1879) in 1899 at Mansfield, they went on to have the following children, Nellie born 18th September 1901, Arthur born 28th May 1904, Agnes Annie born 19th May 1907 and Jessie born 25th August 1913, they lived at 16 Clumber Street, Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family lived at 8, Clumber Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and were shown as Arthur 34 yrs a tin box packer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ellen 32 yrs and their children, Nellie 9 yrs a scholar, Arthur 6 yrs and Agnes Annie 3 yrs old. Following his death his widow Sarah Ellen was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 10th September 1917.

Military History

Private Arthur Wilford enlisted at Derby, he served with the 3rd battalion The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) he died on 9th March 1917 of pneumonia and heart failure at the National Army Hospital, Whitley Bay. He is buried at Whitley Bay (Hartley Road) Cemetery Grave Reference: A C 128
