Charles Tarrant was born in 1872 the son of Charles and Mary Jane Tarrant née Cooke who were married at Nottingham in 1861. Charles married Annie Spray on 25th October 1902 at the Nottingham Registry Office. They had the following children, Charles born 14th July 1903 at Beeston, Fanny Elizabeth born 10th January 1905 at Carlton, George William born 8th January 1907 at Carlton, Annie born 10th January 1909 at Mansfield, John Anthony born 17th September 1912 at Mansfield and Mary born 23rd February 1914. In 1911, they lived at 14 Bleakhill Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
Charles Tarrant initially enlisted on 15th November 1892 at Nottingham aged 20 years 9 months. He served (3882) with the Sherwood Foresters in India and later South Africa. He was discharged on 3rd September1904 but re-enlisted on 21st December 1904. and served until his discharge on 21st December 1908. He again enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Mansfield aged 42 years and 239 days. He served in the Sherwood Foresters on the home front. He was transferred to the 1st Garrison Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 26th May 1916 and on 3rd November 1916 to the 1st Garrison Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. He was posted to Malta on 5th November 1916 and remained there until the end of the war, returning to England on 13th January 1919. He was discharged from the army on 25th February 1919. He died on 22nd August 1920 of pneumonia.
He is buried in Mansfield (Nottingham Road) Cemetery. Research by Peter Gillings
