John Charles Francis Mason was born in 1892 the son of Charles Lowe Mason a grocer and beer retailer and Mary Ann Mason (née Cooper). His father was born in 1866 in Hucknall and his mother in 1871 at Coalvile, Leicestershire. Married in 1890, they had eight children five of whom survived infancy - they were married in 1890, John Charles Francis b.1892, Alfred Cooper b.1897, Esther b.1899, Constance Annie b.1907 and Stella b.1910. In 1911 they lived at 14 Castle Boulevard Nottingham.
John Charles Francis Mason enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 784th Motor Transport Company. He died of pneumonia at Basra Mesopotamia and is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Grave Reference: XX F 11.
His brother Alfred Cooper Mason also served. Enlisting at Nottingham aged 19 on May 17th 1915 he gave his address as 14 Castle Boulevard and his occupation as chauffeur. He was posted to the Army Service Corps with service number M2/113095. He embarked from Southampton on 12th April 1916 landing at Rouen the following day. He served in France until 31st May 1919 when he was returned to England and on 27th June 1919 he was discharged. Death notice published 25th February 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post : “MASON. - On February 16th, (sic) of pneumonia, in Mesopotamia, Pte. J. C. F. Mason (Frank) Mason, M.T., A.S.C., aged 26, dearly loved and eldest son of Mrs. M. A. and the late Mr. C. L.
