John William Garrett

Sergeant John William Garrett enlisted at London, he served with 3rd battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He was reported wounded and missing on 20th October 1914 and despite initial hopes that he had been taken prisoner, he had been killed in action.His body was never identified and he is, therefore, commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.

An article for the 'Nottingham Evening Post', dated 4th December 1914. “MISSING NOTTINGHAM CORPORAL. “A few days ago the War Office reported that Corporal J Garratt. the 3rd Worcesters, whose home is at Blue Bell Hill-road, Nottingham, had been missing since October 30th. Last Monday a letter was received in Nottingham from Garratt’s brother, who is in the same regiment, saying that on October 20th the missing man was made a sergeant. He was told off to go out with a party of men the same day (it was his birthday), and was seen to go down with a bullet. His companions were unable to attend to him. Consequently there was reason to hope that he has been taken prisoner. The other brother writes that the British are being well fed. and that there is an abundance of everything.
