John Jeffery was born in 1897 and was the son of John Atkin, an engine cleaner, and Jane Jeffery( née Upton). His parents were both born at Redhill in 1876. John’s siblings surviving infancy were Doris Ida (b.1903) and Edna May (b.1905). In 1911 they lived at Ram Cottages, Redhill. Living at the same address were John's mother Sarah Ann Jeffery, Esther Mary Jeffery and Beatrice Emily Jeffery.
Private John Jeffrey enlisted at Nottingham, he went to France 7th June 1916 and died of wounds on 24th June 1916 at the 33rd Casualty clearing station, he is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France. Plot 5. Row E. Grave 73
In June, 1916 the battalion was holding trenches near Givenchy and the war diary shows only one casualty list between the 1st and 24th June. The entry for the 3rd June shows that casualties during the past 5 days were 4 other ranks killed and 11 wounded. The battalion spent time in and out of the trenches during this month being at Gorre and Ferme Du Roi. Presumably John was wounded between the 30th May and 3rd June. Sweet is the memory of one we loved so dear. – Father, mother, and sisters.” In memoriam published 24th June 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “JEFFERY. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. Jack Jeffery, died of wounds June 24th, 1916.
