He was the son of John and Hannah Clifton and the brother of Hannah, Albert, Samuel, Joseph, James and Elsie Clifton. In 1901 they lived on High Street, Kimberley. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth (née Cooper) Clifton and the father of Gladys, Robert Alfred, Leonard, Cecil and Albert Clifton. They were living in Bentley, Yorkshire by 1911.
