William Alfred Cooke (junior) was baptised on 7th February 1894 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of William Alfred Cooke (senior) a brewers labourer and Kate Cooke née Keeley of 38 Edwin Street, St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham. His father William Alfred (senior) was born in 1859 at Arnold, Nottingham, his mother Kate Keeley was born in 1869 at Upwell, Norfolk, they were married on 1st March 1886 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 New Yard, Parliament Street, Nottingham, William Alfred is 52 yrs a labourer he is living with his wife Kate 42 yrs and their children, Amelia Kate 23 yrs, May 19 yrs a net finisher, Ellen Elizabeth 18 yrs a net finisher, Edith 12 yrs a scholar, Walter Herny 15 yrs and Frank 3 yrs of age.
Private William Alfred Cooke enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion South Lancashire Regiment. He landed in France on 14th August 1914 and was taken prisoner and died whilst in captivity. His name is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial. Red Cross records show: “Nähere Angaben unbekannt,” (details unknown).
In memoriam 24th October 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post: “COOKE. — In loving memory our dear brother, Private W. A. Cooke, died in Germany, October 24th, 1914. Sadly missed. — From his loving sisters. “COOKE. — In loving memory of our dear son, Private W. A. Cooke, died in Germany, October 24th, 1914.
