He was the son of William Henry and Sarah Dench and the brother of William Henry Dench. In 1911 they lived at Marden Lodge Brockenhurst Hampshire and later at 213 Exchange Road West Bridgford Nottingham.

Rifleman Charles Richard Dench enlisted at Finchley and served with the 5th Battalion (Rifle Brigade) London Regiment He died at the Military Hospital at Devonport on 5th July 1917 and is buried in Plymouth (Efford) Cemetery Grave Reference: C 4888
