Family History

George William Beresford was born in 1897 at Belper he was the son of George a coal miner hewer and Emma Jane Beresford née Belfield and the brother of Violet, John Edward, Harriett, Frederick Thomas and Elsie May Beresford. George was born in 1874 at Belper he died in 1918 aged 44 yrs, Emma Jane Belfield was born in 1877 at Belper they were married on 6th July 1896 at St Peters Church, Belper, they went on to have 8 children, sadly three died in infancy. In 1911 they lived at 24 Meden Bank Stanton Hill, George 37 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Emma Jane 34 yrs and 6 of their children including George Wilie 15 yrs a gang lad in a colliery.

Military History

Private George William Beresford enlisted on 3rd December 1914 at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire giving a false age of 19 years and 11 months, (born in 1897 he was only 17 yrs ) he was a coal miner. He went to France 18th August 1915 and was killed in action 5th October 1915, during a German attack on the British line at Oder Houses, Potije, Belgium. Having no known grave his name commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Panel 39 & 41
