Family History

Robert Hugh Richard Moffatt known as Hugh was born on 26th November 1892, he was baptised on 27th December 1892 at Florden, Norfolk, he was the son of the late Robert a steward and Isabella Moffatt née Brown of Mansfield and Scarborough. His father Robert died before his son, Isabella Brown was born in 1867 at Offord Cluney, Huntingdonshire, they were married in 1890 at Mansergh, Westmorland they had 3 children their other children were Dora and Cecil In the 1901 census the family were living at West Hill Terrace, Mansfield, and by the 1911 census the family were living at 48 Trafalgar Square, Scarborough Isabella is a widow. Robert Hugh Richard emigrated in 1914 to Canada.

Military History

Private Robert Hugh Richard Moffatt served with the 16th (Manitoba) Bn Canadian Infantry he was reported missing in action in April 1915 but his death on 23 April 1915 was not confirmed until September the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium (Panel 24-26-28-30).

Mansfield Reporter, 22 September 1916: ‘Another Mansfield Grammar School Boy Killed. Hugh Moffatt, the eldest son of Isabel and the late Robert Moffatt, who joined the Cameron Highlanders at Winnipeg, on Aug. 7th, has been killed. He was reported missing in April of last year, and is now officially returned as killed in action. He came overseas from Canada with the first contingent. When in Mansfield he attended the Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. In Winnipeg he held a position in a bank. His age was 22 years.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk)
