Benjamin Marsden was born on 11th November 1879 at Newark and was the youngest son of Thomas a general labour and the late Harriet Marsden née Ward of Main Street Balderton, His father was born in 1840 at Balderton and his mother Harriett Ward was born in 1837 at Norwell, she died in 1898 at Balderton, they were married prior to 1858 and went on to have the following children, John b1859, Robert b1860,Mary Betsy b1862, William b1864, Charlotte b1865, Harriett b1867, Frederick b1869, Emma b1871, Leah b1874, Benjamin b1879 and Annie b1882. In the 1911 census his father Thomas is living at Main Street, Balderton and is shown as Thomas 71 yrs a widow and OAP, he is living with his daughter Harriett 44 yrs his housekeeper Benjamin emigrated to Canada prior to the 'Great War' was working as a farmer when he enlisted at Innisfail, Alberta Canada he gave his next of kin as his married sister Leah Holmes
Private Benjamin Marsden enlisted on 5th May 1916 at Innisfail, Alberta Canada, he gave his age as 36 yrs and 6 months, he stated he was a farmer, giving his next of kin as his married sister Mrs Leah Holmes of Innisfail, Alberta, Canada. He served with the 50th battalion Canadian Infantry and was killed in action on 25th August 1917 and his name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.
