Family History

George Litchfield was born in 1896 at Skegby, he was the son of Ezra a pit top labourer and Lavinia Litchfield née Thacker and the brother of Thomas, Lavinia, Rose and Elsie Litchfield of The Nook, Skegby. Ezra was born in 1856 at North Crawley, Lavinia Thacker was born in 1866 at Derby, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 'The Nook' Mansfield Road Skegby, Ezra 55 yrs is a pit top labourer, he is living with his wife Laviia 45 yrs and their children including George 15 yrs working as a coal miner at Silverhill colliery

Military History

Rifleman George Litchfield enlisted on 15th December 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 19 yrs and 15 days, he was a colliery banksman, posted to the 1st battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps he landed in France on 15th April 1915. He was wounded a gun shot wound to his face and chest and admitted to Boulogne hospital on 15th May 1915. He died of his wounds on 28th May 1915 and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
