Charles Curtis

Charles was the son of Henry and Ellen Curtis. In 1881 Henry and Ellen ('Curtes') were living near Whitehaven, Cumberland; five children were in the household on the night of the census. Both Henry and Ellen were born in Wiltshire as were their three oldest children, Eliza (18), Ellen (10) and Henry (8). Of their other two children Mary (7) was born in Appleby, Westmoreland and Martha (3) in Staffordshire. Ellen had been widowed by 1901 and was living at 6 Olive Square, Palin Street, Basford. Three of her children were in the household on the night of the census; Mary, Alfred (22, b. Worthington, Cumberland) and Charles (13). Also living with the family was Ellen's grandson, Mark Curtis (4, b. 1896, Chesterfield). The same year another sibling, Ellen, was working as a servant in Essex. It is believed Ellen Curtis died in Nottingham in 1905. In 1911 Charles was living with his married sister Eliza Johnson (49 born in Gloucester ) who was living with her husband John Fred Johnson (48, a houseman in a brewery) who were living at 37 Nottingham Road, New Basford, Nottingham, with their two children Mary Ellen and Fred. It is presumed that he decided to make a new life for himself and emigrate to Canada.
