Wilfrid was born in 1893 (reg. J/F/M Newark) at North Scarle in Lincolnshire, the second son of Dixon Arthur and Emily Cash.Dixon and Emily (nee Wells) were born and lived in North Scarle, Lincolnshire, and were married in 1892 (A/M/J). Wilfrid's older brother, Henry Wells Cash, was born at North Scarle in 1891. He was born before his parent's marriage and it is possible that his birth was registered as 'Henry Wells' (reg. 1891 J/F/M Newark).By 1901 Dixon (37) and Emily (34) were living at 20 Collinson Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham, with their two sons, Henry (10) and Wilfrid (8). Dixon's occupation was described as 'town postman'. Also in the household was Dixon's sister-in-law, Martha Wells (30), who was a dressmaker.In 1911 the family was living at 27 Daybrook Street, Sherwood, and Dixon was now a school attendance officer for the City Council. His two sons were both at work. Dixon and Emily later lived at Hill Crest, 13 Buckingham Road, Woodthorpe, Nottingham. Wilfrid married Fanny Lockley (b. 1892), the daughter of George and Rachel Lockley, in Nottingham in 1916 (O/N/D). In 1911 Fanny, a hosiery runner-on, was living with her parents on West Street, Arnold; she was one of a numerous family, having nine surviving siblings. At the time the IWGC record was compiled Fanny was living at 43 West Street, Arnold, Nottingham. The death of a Fanny Cash, age 93 (b. 11 March 1892) was registered in Nottingham in March 1985.His brother Henry Wells served as a corporal in the 18th Battalion Canadian Infantry. He died of influenza and pneumonia in France on 3 December 1918, just two months after Wilfrid's death. He left a widow, Hilda Winifred Cash (nee Litchfield), whom he had married in 1915; they lived at The Mount, Woodthorpe Drive, Sherwood, Nottingham.Dixon Arthur Cash died on 21 February 1946 and Emily Cash in 1949 aged 82.
18th Bn Canadian Infantry (Western Ontario Regiment)Wilfrid went to Canada in 1912 and there enlisted as a private in the 2nd Canadians. He served in France and was medically evacuated to England after being wounded, returning to France in November 1917. He was subsequently recommended for a commission and came to England for officer training. He returned to France in September 1918 and while with the 18th Battalion Canadian Infantry (Western Ontario Regiment) was killed by machine gun fire on 10th October 1918. He was buried in Niagara Cemetery, Iwuy, France (grave ref. A.28).War Diary 10 October 1918. 'Bn. HQ T.10d.40.50.Map 51a.SW: ‘’D’ Coy in support, ‘C’ Coy in Reserve. ‘A’ company reached old trenches in T.10.b and T.11.- but further progress was stopped by enemy M.G. fire from the left flank. The Brigade on the left not having gotten forward. ‘B’ Coy reached the river in T.11.b & d. where a line was formed and held. About 13:00 hrs the 19th Battalion with cavalry patrols were swung over from our right in an attempt to our flank the high ground in U.2.- but were unsuccessful owing to an intense M.G. fire and the fact that our own Artillery was out of range at this time. At 14:00 hrs Lieut LS Boulton with nine men went forward and established a post in railway embankment at T.11.b.50.60 east of Rolin? River which was found to be dry.
