Henry was born in 1891 at North Scarle, Lincolnshire, the eldest son of Dixon Arthur and Emily Cash. Dixon and Emily (nee Wells) were born and lived in North Scarle, Lincolnshire, and were married in 1892 (Apr/May/Jun). Henry was born before his parent's marriage and it is possible that his birth was registered as 'Henry Wells' (birth registered 1891, Jan/Feb/Mar, Newark registration district). By 1901 Dixon (37) and Emily (34) were living at 20 Collinson Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham, with their two sons, Henry (10) and Wilfrid Arthur (8). Dixon's occupation was described as 'town postman'. Also in the household was Dixon's sister-in-law, Martha Wells (30), who was a dressmaker. In 1911 the family was living at 27 Daybrook Street, Sherwood, and Dixon was now a school attendance officer for the City Council. His two sons were both at work. Dixon and Emily later lived at Hill Crest, 13 Buckingham Road, Woodthorpe, Nottingham. Henry married Hilda Winifred Litchfield, the daughter of Charles William and Elizabeth Ann Litchfield, in Nottingham in 1915 and at the time of Henry's death they were living at The Mount, Woodthorpe Drive, Sherwood, Nottingham. Henry's brother, Wilfrid, served as a lieutenant in the 18th Battalion Canadian Infantry and was killed on 10 October 1918, two months before Henry's death. He is buried in Niagra Cemetery, Iwuy. He left a widow, Fanny, who lived in Arnold, Nottingham. Dixon Arthur Cash died on 21 February 1946 and Emily Cash in 1949 aged 82.
Henry went to Canada in 1913 and enlisted in Canada in 1914 at the outbreak of the war into the same regiment as his brother the 18th Battalion Canadian Infantry (Western Ontario Regiment). Two days prior to Armistice Day Henry was gassed and taken to hospital where while being treated he developed influenza and pneumonia which caused his death. He is buried in Belgrade Cemetery, Belgium (grave ref. lll.C.12).

Obituary published 11th December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CASH. – Died in hospital at Namur, of pneumonia, December 3rd, Sergt. Harry W. Cash, 18th Canadians, aged 27, the dearly loved husband of Hilda Cash. Death cannot divide. – From his sorrowing wife. “CASH. – Died in hospital at Namur, December 3rd, of pneumonia, Sergt. Harry W.
