William Newball Allen was born on 6th November 1888 in Nottingham and was the son of the late William Newball Allen and Clara Ann Allen née Woodward of 3 Fourth Avenue Sherwood Rise Nottingham. His father William Newball Allen was born in 1857 in Nottingham and his mother was born in 1857 also in Nottingham, they were married on 22nd October 1883 and went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Nottingham, Elizabeth Newball b1885, William Newball b1888, Clara Gertrude b1891 and Arthur James b1893. His father William Newball died in 1910 in Nottingham he was 53 yrs of age. In the 1911 census we find his mother , living with her mother in law at 3 Argyle Terrace, Shakespeare Street, Nottingham, they are shown as Betsy Allen 79 yrs widow living on her own means living with her daughter in law Clara Ann Allen 53 yrs and her grandchildren, Elizabeth Allen 25 yrs a booksellars clerk, Clara 19 yrs no occupation and Arthur James 17 yrs a bookstall clerk.
Private William Newball Allen, had served previously in the South Lancashire Regiment in 1911 . Whilst serving with the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, He had been wounded previously on 13th December 1915, a rifle grenade wound to his back at Kemmel. He was reported wounded and missing, later confirmed killed in action on 13th June 1916. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial
