He was the son of William and Emma J. Odam, of 49, Raleigh St., Nottingham, England. Siblings William, Albert Edward and Alice. 1901 census: parents and William (8) and Harry (5, born abt 1896) living at 7 Sandringham Terrace, Nottm. 1911 census: 44 Bangor Street, Alfred Street, Nottm; parents with William, Harry, Albert Edward (9) and Alice Mary (5). Harry departed London for Melbourne, Australia, onboard SS Geelong (P&O) on 28 August 1913. The passenger list gives his age as 18 and trade as 'lace worker'. His brother, William, also served in the war.
Harry Odam enlisted at Melbourne on 25th June 1915 and landed at Suez on 7th December 1915. Taken on the strength of 5th Pioneer Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, on 3rd March 1916, he embarked at Alexandria for Marseilles on 19th June 1916, arriving on 25th June 1916. Though a burial is recorded in his service record, the grave was lost and he is, therefore, commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial
