Family History

George Labron Barnett was born in 1896 he was the son of Lawrence a joiner and Emily Barnett née Labron of Rifle Volunteer Inn, Skegby. Lawrence was born in 1873 at Hunslett, Leeds, Emily Labron was born in 1874 at Leeds, they were married on 21st October 1893 at St Stephens Church, Burmantofots, and went on to have 5 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at Springford Farm, Sutton in Ashfield, Lawrence 38 yrs is a joiner, he is living with his wife Emily 37 yrs and their 5 children including George Labron 15 yrs a colliery engine driver and Albert 14 yrs a colliery banksman

Military History

Private George Labron Barnett enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 8th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he is buried at Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood, Somme, France

Extra Information

His brother Albert Barnett enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield , he served with the 7th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 26th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
