Herbert was born in Sturton Le Steeple in 1890 and was the son of William and Anne Elizabeth Green (nee Nicholson.) He was the brother of Walter, Nellie and William Green and the four siblings lived together on Walter's farm at Laneham in 1911.
Pte Herbert Green The Retford Times 20/10/1916 Another brave Laneham man has laid down his life for King and country. News has been received that Pte Herbert Green, who was serving with the Australian Force died on August 23rd from wounds received on the 19th of the same month. He was the youngest of four brothers serving and was brother of Mrs Goodger, Darlton. Platoon Sergeant Wilson writing from “somewhere in France”, says:- “For King and country with the Australian Forces, Pte Herbert Green, late of Laneham, died of wounds received in France. He was the youngest of four brothers serving their King and country. He was a young man of sunny disposition having hosts of friends wherever he went. He was a good soldier and had volunteered as a reserve stretcher bearer before going over the top, but was wounded by a shell very soon after going over on the 19th August on the Somme. His elder brother was in the same battalion in the training camp.”
He was born J/A/S/1890 so may have been 25 when killed. He also had an elder brother William who also served during the Great War with the Lincolnshire Regiment who was killed on 9th March 1917
