Robert Bottomore (junior) was born in 1899 in Nottingham, he was the son of Robert Bottomore (senior) a cycle fitter and Eliza Bottomore née White he had a brother Henry and sister Florence Bottomore. They lived at 44 Independent Street Radford Nottingham. In 1911 the family are living at 76 Hazelwood Rood Road, Robert (senior) is 32 yrs of age and a cycle fitter, he is living with his wife Eliza34 yrs and their two children, Robert 11 yrs and Harry 7 yrs. Robert emigrated on 1st July 1914 from London on the ship Euripidies, bound for Sydney, Australia, he is travelling alone giving his age as 16 yrs and is a farm hand. He lived in Sydney and was a farm worker.
Private Robert Bottomore enlisted in Australia on 10th June 1917 giving a false age of 22 yrs and 9 months, he served with the 35th battalion Australian Infantry. He died of pneumonia and is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 25 February 1919: BOTTOMORE on February 21st, Private Robert Bottomore (Australians) age 19, died in hospital in France of pneumonia. Mother, brother Henry, sister Flo, 44 Independent Street, Radford In memoriam published 21st February 1920 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BOTTOMORE. - In proud and loving memory of Pte. R. Bottomore, late Australian Forces, who died in France of pneumonia, February 21st 1919, aged 19 years, the eldest son of Mrs. Eliza Bottomore (nee White). The blow was heavy none can tell, in losing one I loved so well.
