He was the son of Edward and Maria Matilda Smith (his real surname). He was the brother of John, Sarah, Ellen and Ada Smith. In 1881 they lived at 6, Derby Road, Nottingham. His address was Freemason's Hotel, Currie Street, Adelaide, South Australia. His next of kin upon enlistment was an uncle Joseph Elliott, c/o JG Elliott & Son Market Place, Nottingham.
27th Bn 9th Reinforcement The unit embarked 7/2/1916 form Adelaide, South Australia aboard HMAT A28 Miltades. He served under an alias - William Evans - and has another CWGC number for this name (1460422). He had served some time in the Robin Hood Rifles before emigration to Australia.
