Family History

George Wilkinson was born in 1885 the son of William Wilkinson a stoker in a chemical works, born 1860 at Wadsworth Yorkshire, (he died aged 50 in 1910). His mother Rose Hannah Wilkinson (née Mason) was born in 1860 at Ilkeston. They were married in 1883 and had 14 children, all born in the Awsworth /Kimberley districts. They were living at 169 Eastwood Road, Kimberley in 1901. In 1911, Rose Hannah was living at Highfields, Wingfield near Cheterfield with her children Frank, John, Lily, Cyril and Amy. George married Sarah Jane Hoult in 1905, (she was born 1886 Hucknall) and they had four children including William (b.1907) and Nellie (b.1910).

Military History

George Wilkinson enlisted at Mansfield serving initially (13978) in the Leicestershire Regiment. Later transferring to the Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France 1/4/1915 and was killed in action two months later. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres, Belgium.
