Matthew Staniland was born in 1871 the son of James Staniland a painter and Elizabeth Staniland (née Hayes). His father was born in 1838 at Bingham (he died 1894 aged 56) his mother in 1842 at Blidworth. Married in 1869, Elizabeth already had three children - John Hayes b.1864, Arthur Hayes b.1865 and James Hayes b.1869. The couple had eight children - Nathaniel b.1870, Matthew b.1871, Thomas b.1873, Elizabeth b.1876, Ann b.1880, Charles b.1882, George Henry b.1887 and Albert b.1891. In 1911 they lived at 4 Botany Avenue Mansfield. Elizabeth was a charwoman, Nathaniel a shoemaker, George a labourer and Albert a colliery pony driver.
Matthew Staniland (served as Standiland) attested on 11th January 1916, giving his age as 34 years and 196 days (he was actually 45, born in 1871). His address was Stockwell Gate, Mansfield. The following day he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 27th March 1916 and posted to the 7th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He went out to France embarking from Folkstone and landing in Boulogne on 12th March 1917. He served on the Western Front. However falling ill, he was returned to England on 6th December 1917 and was at some point transferred to Western Command Labour Centre, Labour Corps. He was admitted to the Mansfield Auxiliary Hospital on 15th March 1918 and died on 11th June 1918. His cause of death was given as malignant disease and exhaustion. He was buried in Mansfield, Nottingham Road Cemetery.
