Family History

George and Sarah Thompson married and set up home in Retford living at Bridegate. They were blessed with five children, Ellen born 1887, Jessie 1891, John 1894, George 1900 and Frank in 1901. In 1901, George the elder, was employed as a licence victualler and the family were living at 69 Carolgate in Retford. Two years later in 1903, George died aged 40. It appears that his widow, Sarah, carried on in the same trade as her husband as in 1911 she was an inn keeper at the Black Head Inn at 18 Chaplegate. She was assisted in the business by her daughter Jessie, whilst son, John Thompson was working as an apprentice baker.

Military History

John enlisted at Retford but with a lack of records, his movements in the war are as yet unknown other than he died whilst on active service and has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tehran Memorial in Iraq.
