Frederick Harold Loftus was born in Manchester in 1900 to Francis Arthur and Ellen Loftus. In 1899, Francis (Frank) married Ellen. Although Frederick’s parents had two daughters, Cecily and Ethel, Frederick was the eldest child. Between 1900 and 1906 the family had left Manchester for Retford and in 1911, were resident at 9 Strawberry Terrace, where Francis was employed as a window cleaner. It was here that Cecily and Ethel were born and in 1916, another son, Francis Junior was born. The family later moved to 9 Dominic Cross Road, Retford.
On the 12th day of December 1917, Frederick Harold Loftus of Dominic Cross Rd ., Retford, was attested at the age of 17 years 11 months. He joined the 9th Bn N. Staffs, (pioneers) D Company, number 51070. His next of kin was recorded as Francis Arthur Loftus and also declared that he was working as a window cleaner, (like his father). He was allotted to the army reserve and was mobilised on the 18th February 1918. After training, he was sent to France on 14th July 1918 where he was killed in action two months later. He is buried in the Bertincourt Chateau British Cemetery, France.
