Walter Kirk was born in 1896 the son of Frank [b. Nottingham 1871] a tool dealers assistant and Louisa Kirk [née Elliott b. 1872 Nottingham]. Louisa had previously been married to Henry Stubbs with whom she had a child Henry born 9th April 1891. Henry Stubbs died on 16th December 1890 aged 19. She married Walter Kirk in 1894 at Nottingham and they had a daughter Louisa b.1895. In 1911 they lived at 84 Robin Hood Street Nottingham. Frank was a tool dealer's assistant, Henry a lace machine fitter and Louisa a blouse machinist.
Walter Kirk enlisted at Nottingham, landed in France 3/3/1915 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 7. He was awarded the Military Medal the citation for which reads : “For devotion to duty on 27th/28th May 1917, (Exeter Castle), in a raid on the Hair Pin Craters, he showed great bravery throughout, having entered the crater he led his men to the further objective. On returning to our lines he discovered that his officer [1] had been knocked down by a “Minnie” he immediately volunteered to go out and look for him. This he did, remaining in the enemy trenches even after our artillery had ceased to fire.” Cliff Housely, (Comp.), “British Gallantry Awards. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, he was the son of Thomas and Alice Cousins, of 'Montpelier,' Mapperley Plains, Nottingham.
