Joseph Henry Simpson Sheriston was born in 1886 the son of Henry a coal miner and Esther Sheriston née Simpson of Alfreton Road, Selston. Henry was born in 1867 at Hyson Green, Nottingham, Esther Simpson was born in 1869 at Selston, married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they went on to have the following children, Joseph Henry b1886 Selston, Sarah Jane b1892 Hyson Green, Hilda b1895 Hyson Green, John Alfred b1897 Hyson Green, Emma b1899 Hyson Green, William b1901 Hyson Green, Esther b1908 Selston, Bertha b1910 Selston and James b1911 Selston. Joseph Henry married Maud Mary Hopkinson (born 28th October 1888) in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 2 children Edna born 10th November 1911 and Fanny born 31st January 1914. They they lived on Lindley Street, Selston. In 1911 they lived at 18 Clarence Street Pleasley Hill Mansfield Joseph is shown as being 25 yrs and is a cola miner hewer, he is living with his wife Maud Mary 22 yrs. In 1911 his parents and siblings are living at Alfreton Road, Selston and are shown as Henry 44 yrs a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Esther 43 yrs and their children, Sarah Jane 18 yrs at home no occupation, John Alfred 14 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Emma 12 yrs a scholar, William 10 yrs a scholar, Esther 3 yrs, Bertha 1 year of age and James 2 months old.
