He was the son of Frederick and Louisa Whitehouse. The birth of a John Charles Whitehouse was registered in 1890 (Apr/May/June). Both parents were born in Birmingham, but in 1901 they were living at 9 Thoroughfare Yard, St James' Street, Nottingham. Frederick (47) was a hat manufacturer on his own account while his wife (41) was a dressmaker. On the night of the census five children were in the household; Frederick (12), John (10), Percy (8), Raynard (7) and Louisa (5). At the time of John's death his address was given as 14 Alfred Street South, Nottingham
He served in France from 29 June 1915 and was reported missing after the first day of the Battle of the Somme although his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A. Memorial). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 11 June 1917: ‘Whitehouse. Missing July 1st 1916, now reported killed, Private John Charles Whitehouse, age 27, of 14 Alfred Street, South.
