Family History

Charles was the son of Charles and Mary Marshall Walker. Charles snr. was born in either Staffordshire or Dudley, Worcestershire, while his wife was born in Whitehaven, Cumbria. According to the information provided on the 1911 Census Charles and Mary had been married for 23 years and had had 13 children of whom only 11 survived. However, only ten children were named on the census of 1901 and 1911 (the family has not yet been traced on the 1891 Census): Ethel b. Workington, Cumbria, Edith b. Stockton on Tees, Nellie b. Manchester, Charles b. Manchester 1897, Dorothy b. Barrow in Furness 1900, Herbert b. Workington 1902, Harold b. Workington), Annie b. Nottingham, Harry b. 1908 Nottingham and Rene b. 1910 Nottingham. In 1901 Charles, a boiler maker, and Mary were living at 18 Baden Powell Road, Barrow in Furness, with their five children; Ethel (11), Edith (8), Nellie (5), Charles (3) and Dorothy (11 months). The census noted that Ethel had suffered from 'children's paralysis from childhood'. By 1911 the family was living in Nottingham at 7 Bombay Street, St Ann's. Charles senior was still working as a boiler maker. Nine children were in the household on the night of the census; Edith who made veilings for a lace manufacturer, Nellie who also worked for a lace manufacturer), Charles an errand boy (stationery trade), Dorothy, Herbert (9), Harold (7), Annie (5), Harry (3) and Rene (1). Ethel has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census but neither has a record been found of her death. At the time of Charles jnr.'s death in 1918 the family home was at 30 Martin Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham.

Military History

RNVR RN Depot (Crystal Palace). Charles died of pneumonia on 14 October 1918 and was buried in Beckenham Crematorium and Cemetery (formerly called Crystal Palace District Cemetery), Elmers End Road, Beckenham, Kent (grave ref W5).
