He was the son of Alexander and Matilda Redgate who had 17 children but 8 died in infancy prior to 1911. The surviving children were, Elizabeth, Mary, Alexander, Henry , Eliza, Arthur , Kate , Florence, and Frederick. In 1901 the family lived at 6 Wilfrid Terrace Berridge Road Nottingham but by 1911 had moved to 40 Gauntley Street Radford with three of their youngest children , Arthur, Kate and Florrie. Henry married Ada Allen in Nottingham in 1914 and they had a daughter Dorothy Mary born 23rd December 1917. The family lived at 9 Abbey Grove The Wells Road, Nottingham. Following Harry’s death his wife Ada and daughter went to live at 212 The Wells Road.
Harry’s service record survives and shows that he enlisted in Nottingham on 12th December 1915, He gave his religion as Church of England. On the 13th December 1915 he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 14th August 1917 and posted on the 22nd August to the Royal Field Artillery. However on 12th October 1917 he was transferred to the Labour Corp and served with the 411th Agricultural Corps (Private 529223) in Derby. Over a year later on 21st October 1918 whilst on home leave, he was admitted to the Military Hospital Sycamore Road Nottingham suffering from influenza and a week later he died at 12 noon.
