He was the son of Richard Edward and Lucy Ann Lang and the brother of Richard, Lily, William John (killed in action 24/4/1916), Charles Henry (killed in action 8/8/1916), Reginald, Florence Elizabeth, Ellen Mabel, Richard Edward, Annie, Violet Mabel and Sarah Ann Lang. In 1901 the family lived at Ilminster Somerset and in 1911 at 11 Milk Street, Glasshouse Street Nottingham.
