Thomas James Silverwood

Thomas James was the eldest son of James Edward and Florence Emma Silverwood (née Garwood). Thomas' father James Edward was born in Manchester in 1872 (A/M/J Chorlton Lancs), the son of Edward James and Harriet Silverwood. Edward James, a boot and shoe maker, was born in Surrey in about 1841 and his wife Harriett in Blaby, Leicestershire. The family obviously moved around the country as James Edward's siblings were born in Lancashire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. By 1881 the family was living at Castle Terrace, Nottingham. Edward James died in 1881 (O/N/D Nottingham) aged 40. His wife Harriett remarried (Edwin Hobday, 1903) and they had three sons. She died in 1932. Thomas' mother, Florence Emma Garwood was born in London on 21 September 1874. There is a record on the 1891 Census of a Florrie (sic) Garwood (14 b. London), a general servant, living at Millstone Place, Nottingham, in the household of William Paulson, a sawyer, his wife and family along with five lodgers. James Edward and Florence Emma were married at Nottingham St Ann on 24 December 1893 (O/N/D Nottingham) and had eight children: Florence Ethel b. Nottingham 16 April 1894, Sybil b. Nottingham 17 October 1895, Nellie b. Nottingham 22 July 1897, Thomas James b. Nottingham 1898 (J/A/S Nottingham), Edward Walter b. Notingham 17 September 1900, Harriet Lillian b. Carlton 24 September 1903, James Ernest b. Carlton 5 June 1905 and Rose Emma b. Carlton 5 January 1907. In 1901 James (29), a wood sawyer, and Florence (25) were living at 49 Westville Street, Nottingham, with their five children: Florence (6), Sybil (5), Nellie (3), Thomas (2) and Edward (under 1 year). Also in the household was a lodger, Elizabeth Watson (41) a widow, who worked as a machinist. By 1911 the family was living at 95 Garden City, Cemetery Road, Carlton. James was now employed as a wood cutting machinist. Seven of the eight children were in the home on the night of the census: Sybil a lace hand finisher, Nellie a cotton doffer, Thomas, Edward, Harriett (6), James (5) and Rose (3). The eldest child, Florence, was a general servant in the household of John Beale inn keeper of the Dog & Pheasant, 60 Bloomsgrove Street, New Radford. Thomas' parents were living at 3 Ellis Terrace, Northville Street, Nottingham, by 1934 - a report in the local paper of damage caused by a severe storm in the September mentions that Mr JE Silverwood (62)' of that address was 'hurled flat' by falling bricks. James died in 1938 (J/F/M Nottingham). His widow Florence was still living at 3 Ellis Terrace, Nottingham in 1939 when the England and Wales Register was compiled. She died in 1966 (J/F/M Nottingham). Of Thomas James' siblings: Florence E Silverwood married John L Shacklock in 1914; they probably had six children, Doris G. b. 1915, Irene b. 1921, Rowena b. 1928, Clematis b. 1931, Robert D. b. 1935 and Ann b. 1938. In 1939 Florence and John (b. 5 January 1894) a colliery bricklayer (below ground) were living on Westdale Lane, Mapperley. The records of four other members of the household remain closed. Florence died in 1987 (J/A/S Nottingham). Sybil married Samuel Pierpoint (later Pierrepont) at Basford register Office on 8 August 1914. She and Samuel had one child, Sybil Iris b. 26 December 1914 but they may have also had two sons, Harold J. (b. 1920) and Kenneth S. (b. 1925). Samuel attested on 11 February 1915 in the Sherwood Foresters but later transferred to the Tank Corps (304853). He served in BEF (Med) from 23 August 1915 to 23 January 1916 then had two periods of service with BEF France, July 1916-February 1917 and 27 April 1918-22 January 1919. Samuel was discharged to 40 Manvers Street, Netherfield, on 30 August 1919. He and Sybil were still living at the same address in 1939; he was working as a railway fireman. Samuel died on 15 March 1951; the probate record gives his address as 6 Manvers Street, Netherfield. Sybil died on 11 October 1977; the probate record gave her address as 6 Manvers Street. Nellie married Bruce Clarson in 1920 (J/F/M Basford) and they probably had six children: Margaret A. b. 17 July 1920, Dorothy M. b. 1924, Constance N. b. 17 January 1926, Thomas A. b. 18 July 1928, Bruce b. 1931 and Sybil I. b. 1933. In 1939 Nellie and Bruce (b. 6 July 1898), a bricklayer journeyman, were living at 10 Primrose Crescent, Carlton with their children Margaret an auxiliary nurse, Constance N. and Thomas. The record of one other member of the household remains closed. Nellie died in 1965. Edward Walter married Edith Garner (b. 25 February 1899) in 1921. They had five children: James H. b. 1921, Joyce b. 4 January 1927, Doreen b. 26 January 1931, Edward W. b. 1933 and William G. b. 1936. In 1939 Edward, an elastic hand frame knitter, and Edith, a lace drawer, were living on Fulwood Crescent, Nottingham, with their daughters Joyce and Doreen. The records of three other members of the household remain closed. Walter died in 11 May 1942. A notice of his death in the local paper named his children including 'Jimmy (N. Africa)'. His widow Edith married Herbert Waldram in 1944. Harriett Lillian married Leslie WD Thomas in 1923. They probably had three children, George HW b. 1925, Norman Thomas Leatherland b. 5 February 1927, and Clifford L. b. 1931. In 1939 they were living on Moffatt street, Nottingham; Leslie (b. 22 January 1900) was a motor driver/dealer. Also in the home was their son Norman; the records of two other members of the household remain closed. Harriett died in 1987. James Ernest married May Scott (b. 17 August 1904) in 1925. In 1939 they were living at 5 Ellis Terrace, Nottingham, next door to James' widowed mother. James was a builder's labourer and May an underwear presser.
