Alfred William Hind

367 Private Alfred William Hind enlisted in 7th (Robin Hoods) battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 4th May 1908. Listed as born Aldershot Hants, 28 years 4 months and a driller. He had already served with the 1st Notts Volunteer Rifle Corps from 14 January 1901 until 3 May 1908, which then became the Territorial Force. Alfred attended the yearly camps in 1908 and 1909. He was re-engaged for 3 years on 10 April 1910 and attended camps in 1910,11 and 12. On 6 February 1913 he was re-engaged for a further two years. On the outbreak of war Alfred was embodied, The medal rolls show him as 20004, 1/6th battalion, 242597, 2/5th battalion and finally 1st battalion. He is listed as being at home from 5 August 1914 until 27 February 1915. Then with the BEF in France/Belgium from 28 February 1915 until 10 December 1915. He was wounded in action on 4 August 1915 - Shrapnel wound to shoulder and sent to No 10 Casualty Clearing Station at Abeele Belgium. The following day he was transferred to the 25th General Hospital at Etaples. on 14 August, he was sent to a convalescent Camp at Camiers. On 9 November he was at 46th Base depot at Rouen although on 9 December, Alfred was cleared permanently from Base to England. He was listed as at home from 11 December 1915 until 4 May 1916, On 12th January 1916 he was posted from 1/7th battalion to the 3/7th battalion based in the UK. It then shows Alfred being discharged on 4 May 1916 under Para 392 (xxi) King's Regulations, which was Termination of period of service. It is likely that by August 1916, Alfred had re-signed and was once again serving overseas. Why a man who had a wife and four children rejoined may never be known. By October 1918 the German army was all but defeated and the Allies pushed them towards Germany. On 19th October the 1st battalion resumed the advance and all objectives were taken and made secure. Patrols worked their way through the Forest of Marchiennet until nightfall, the remainder of the men held the line from Tilloy to the north of Bouteau. Alfred was the only man killed that day, just a few weeks before the end of the war.
