Frederick Barrowcliff was born in 1888 the son of George a sinker maker and Ann Barrowcliff née Cartledge. His parents lived at 43 Corporation Road, Nottingham. His father was born in 1852 at Normanton on Soar and his mother in 1854 at Woodborough. They were married in 1872 in the Basford Registration district. Frederick had four siblings - Herbert b.1872 Woodborough, Thomas b.1877 Nottinham, James Cartledge b.1879, Harry b.1881 Nottingham and Kate b.1883 Nottingham.Frederick was the husband of Mabel Millicent Barrowcliffe, née Willoughby. They married in April 1908 and had five children; Winifred Mabel, born in 1909, Frederick, born in 1910, Stanley, born in April 1912, Margaret, born in October 1914 and Ivy L. born in June 1917. The family lived at 52 Corporation Road, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham.
Frederick Barrowcliff was called up and enlisted at Nottingham and following training drafted to France. In April 1918 the Germans launched their second offensive of the year, Operation Georgette, against the River Lys defences. The line bulged but did not break, but British casualties were heavy, including Barrowcliff who was killed in action on 12th April 1918 has no known grave his name was commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
One of his brothers also died during the war: Private Harry Barrowcliff, 1/6th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 29th September 1918. He is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial. In memoriam published 12th April 1919 in The Nottingham Evening Post :- “BARROWCLIFF. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. Fred. Barrowcliff, killed in action April 12th, 1918. If those who caused this awful war were the only ones to fight a brighter world this would have been for aching hearts to-night. – Sorrowing wife and children, 52, Corporation-road. Also from his sincere friends, Mr. and Mrs. Starmer. Still to memory ever dear. “BARROWCLIFF. – In loving memory of Pte. Fred Barrowcliff, killed in action April 12th, 1918.
