Harry Clarke (junior) was born on 5th July 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of Harry (senior) a lace maker and Catherine Clarke née Bird of 11 Goldsmith Street Nottingham. His father Harry (senior) was born in 1866 at Nottingham, his mother Catherine Bird was born in 1866 at Derby they were married on 24th December 1895 at St Anns parish church and went on to have the following children, Grace b1892, Maude b1894, Doris b1896, Harry b1898, Herbert b1904 and Gladys b1906, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Argyle Street, Nottingham and are shown as Harry 45 yrs a lace maker, he is living with his wife Catherine 45 yrs and their children, Grace 19 yrs a cotton winder, Maude 17 yrs (occupation not clear) Doris 15 yrs a scholar, Harry 12 yrs a scholar, Herbert 7 yrs and Gladys 5 yrs of age.
Gunner Harry Clarke, served with “C” Battery, 86th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, he was killed in action on 3rd April 1918. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
War obituary, All Saints Church News, June 1918: 'Harry Clarke, 114 Goldsmith Street [CWGC - street number, 11], Gunner RFA, killed in action April 3rd 1918 age 19. He had been in France since January. Attended Holy Trinity Day and Sunday Schools and before joining the Army worked at Berry’s in Wollaton Street.' Death notice published 22nd April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CLARKE. – Killed in action Gunner H.
