Cyril Barnes was born in 1893 at Nottingham and was the sonn of John Thomas a colliery bricklayers labour and Sarah Jane Barnes née Bennett of 194 Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham. His father John Thomas was born in 1861 at Greasley and his mother Sarah Jane Bennett was born in 1853 at Kimberley, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Harry b1885, Frank b1887, Edith b1888 all were born in Kimberley, Percy b1891 Luton, Elsie b1892 Stevenage, Cyril b1893 Annie b1894, Doris b1902 and Ellis b1904 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 194 Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham and are shown as Sarah 58 yrs married she is living with her children, Harry 26 yrs a lace packer, Frank 24 yrs a colliery labourer, Edith 23 a lace jennier, Percy 20 yrs an electrical instrument fitter, Elsie 19 yrs a machinist, Cyril 18 yrs an apprentice pattern maker, Annie 17 yrs a lace patterner Doris 9 yrs and Ellis 7 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census we find his father John Thomas Barnes 50 yrs a bricklayers labourer at a colliery boarding at Sherwood Street, Newton, Alfreton, Derbyshire, he is boarding with Herbert Smith 42 yrs a coal miner hewer and his family.
Pioneer Cyril Barnes enlisted on 3rd September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 21 yrs and 344 days, his address was 29 Coppice Road, Mapperley, Nottingham his next of kin was his father John Thomas Barnes of the same address, he stated he was a pattern maker. He was posted to the Royal Engineers with the service number 46349. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 10th December 1914 he landed in France on 10th September 1915. He was wounded on 6th March 1916 a gun shot wound to his right shoulder from which he developed tuberculosis and was discharged on 2nd July 1916 and then served with the labour corps with service number 117677 he died on 2nd September 1917 of tuberculosis and is buried at Canada Farm Cemetery Grave Reference: II G 23
