Richard Burton Everitt was born in 1887 the son of Joseph a general labourer and Emma Everitt (née Burton). His father was born in 1854 at Saltby (died aged 44 in 1905), his mother in 1858 at Harlaxton, Lincolnshire. Married in 1879, Richard’s ten siblings were Jane b.1880, Joseph, b.1881, Edith b.1883, Emma Ellen b.1885, Sally b.1889, Sarah Ann b.1890, Kate b.1892, Ada b.1894, Maggie b.1898 and May b.1900. In 1911 they lived at 39 Dame Agnes Street St Ann’s Nottingham. Richard married Maud Bertha Wilson on 23rd December 1911 at St Ann’s Parish Church and they had two children, Elsie May born 3rd May 1912 and Florence Bertha born 17th June 1913. They lived at 69 Plantagenet Street and later 30 Lamartine Street (both St Ann’s). In February 1918, Maud started receiving a weekly pension of 22/11d for herself and two children.
8th Bn Richard Burton Everitt enlisted on 26th November 1914 at Nottingham. He was posted as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery and joined them at Newhaven on 30th November 1914. He was transferred to the Border Regiment on 9th November 1915 and embarked from Devonport on 24th November 1915 to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in the Dardenelles. He was transferred to the Western Front on 9th April 1916 and admitted to hospital on 3rd May 1916 with gunshot wounds to both legs. He was evacuated by the Hospital Ship Stad Antwerper back to England. Following treatment and recovery he once again embarked for France leaving Folkstone on 31st October 1916 arriving the same day at Boulogne.
