William married Annie L Roe in 1911 (A/M/J, registration district Nottingham). The details of two children have been found on the Register of Births who are likely to have been William and Annie's sons; William A Middleton, who was born about 1912 and who died in 1912 (O/N/D), and William T Middleton, born 1913 (O/N/D) and who may have died in 1943 aged 29 (registration district Nottingham). At the time of William's death the family was living at 24 Nugent Street, Calcutta Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham.
9th Bn. He was killed in action and is buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, (grave ref. III.H.13). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Evening Post, ‘Roll of Honour’, 26 June 1917: ‘Middleton. Killed in action, June 2nd, 1917, Sergeant W Middleton, Scottish Rifles, 24, Nugent-street, age 40. He left his home one morning, intending to come back, but sad the news that came to us, which we shall not forget; duty called him, he was there, to do his bit, to take his share; his heart was good, his spirit brave, his resting place a soldier’s grave. From sorrowing wife and sonny, also broken-hearted mother and father, sisters, and brothers, mother-in-law, and sister.(www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 31 June 1917. ‘Sergt W Middleton (Scottish Rifles), 24 Nugent Street, Nottingham, killed in action June 2nd age 40.’ His widow, Annie, was his sole legatee. She was awarded payments for herself and child.
