John was born in 1886 the son of John Henry and Kate Brough (née Lawson). His parents were born at Sneinton Nottingham, John Henry in 1855, Kate in 1856. Married in 1875, they had eleven children, eight surviving infancy - Sarah b1876, Florence b1879, Robert b1880, Joseph b1884, John b1886, Kate b1888, Harriett b1891 and May b1889. John married Albina Smedley on 16/10/1910 in Nottingham and their son Ernest was born 19/9/1912. They lived at 11 Guy's Terrace, Bluebell Hill, Nottingham. In 1911 John’s parents and three siblings, Kate, a lace maker, Harriet , a lace Jenner and May were living at 22 Enoch Terrace, Thomas Street, Peas Hill Road, Nottingham.
John Brough enlisted in Nottingham and landed in France with 'B' Coy on 24th December 1915. He was killed through the accidental explosion of a bomb in poor trench conditions due to snow. Lapugnoy Military Cemetery Grave Reference: I E 30
Nottingham Evening Post 20th March 1916: “BROUGH. – Died March 5th, Pte. John Brough, K.O.S.B., from wounds (accidental explosion of bomb), the dearly loved husband of Albina Brough, 11 Elm-grove, Blue Bell-hill. Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. – Sadly missed by his sorrowing wife and sonnie. “BROUGH. – Died March 5th, Pte. John Brough, K.O.S.B., from wounds, the dearly loved son of Kate and John Brough.
