Joseph Hankin was born in 1895 he was the son of William a lace curtain maker and Harriett Hankin née Read of 5 Victoria Cottage, Station Road, Selston, William was born in 1860 at Basford, Harriett Read was born in 1861 at Burton on Trent, they were married on 27th December 1881 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, they went on to have 11 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 10 Clinton Street, Beeston, William 51 yrs is a lace curtain maker, he is living with his wife Harriett 50 yrs and their children Edward 18 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Joseph 16 yrs a coal miner pony driver, and Harriett 14 yrs a lace mender.
Private Joseph Hankin enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Alfreton, he initially served with the service number 22528 in The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he later transferred to the 9th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He was reported missing in action, later killed in action on 26th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
