Harry Dove was born in 1895 at Selston he was the son of William Lynam Dove a colliery blacksmith and Mary Ann Dove née Smith and the brother of Harry, Mary and Frank Dove of Selston Nottinghamshire. William Lynam was born in 1866 at Crich, Mary Ann Smith was born in 1873 at Selston, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Nottingham Road, Selston, William 45 yrs is a colliery blacksmith he is living with his wife Mary Ann 38 yrs and their children including Harry 16 yrs a coal miner.
Harry Dove enlisted on 1 September 1914 into the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). His medal index card shows entry into theatre (France) as 27 December 1914, arriving at the 1st Battalion on 3rd January 1915. During the short period of his service the battalion were holding trenches ('A' Lines) facing Neuve Chapelle. They carried out tours of duty in this sector, exchanging with 2nd East Lancashire. They rested at Red Barn billets just south of Rouge-Croix and La Gorgue when out of the line. It is always difficult to tell when a man was wounded, although he would have been taken to the 6th Casualty Clearing Station at Merville fairly quickly. He died of his wounds there on 14 February 1915 and was buried in the adjacent Merville Communal Cemetery, grave I.G.6
