Military History

Tom Wilcockson enlisted around the 21 August 1914 and sailed with the battalion to Gallipoli. After a brief occupation of trenches near Helles in late July, they took part in the landing at Suvla Bay on the night of 6/7th August. Instead of moving inland to engage the Turks, the battalion was ordered to link up with the ANZAC troops and dig in. On 9 August they were ordered to attack towards Hetman Char but after an advance of 1000 yards, they came under heavy fire from the enemy. By 8 am many of the officers and men had become casualties. Tom was one of the men killed and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. John Morse
